Privacy Policy
Draft for legal review · Version 2026-10-16.1
NookScan is built so that what you scan stays on your phone. This policy explains what the app handles and where it goes.
NookScan is provided by Ado Prudent Ltd through its SEP Africa programme, and published on Google Play under the developer name NookScan. If NookScan moves to another company in our group or a successor company, this policy moves with it and the app will tell you.
Summary
- No account. We don't ask for your name, email or phone number.
- We don't collect scan results, device lists, saved sweeps, room notes, photos or your location.
- No analytics, advertising or crash-reporting services are built in.
- Payments for NookScan Pro are handled by Google Play.
What stays on your phone
- Scan results: lists of devices on your Wi-Fi network, nearby Wi-Fi hotspots and Bluetooth devices, with their signal strength and ratings. These are held in the app's memory and are cleared when you start a new sweep or close the app.
- Devices you mark as yours: when you tap "Mark as mine", the device's name (or its hotspot's hardware address) is saved in the app's private storage so it's kept apart next time. Uninstalling the app deletes the list. It is excluded from cloud backup and device-to-device transfer.
- Room checklist: notes and photos you add are saved in the app's private storage on your phone. Deleting a room, or uninstalling the app, deletes them. They are excluded from cloud backup and device-to-device transfer.
- Saved sweeps: when you tap "Save this sweep", the time, the place name you type, the devices found (including ones marked as yours and other people's phones) and what you said you found at each are saved in the app's private storage. The phone's location is added only if you tick "Add my location": it is read once, at that moment, and never looked up as an address. You can delete one saved sweep or all of them in Saved sweeps; uninstalling the app deletes them too. They are excluded from cloud backup and device-to-device transfer.
- Airport bag records (Pro): for each bag you add, the photos you take (the bag on the scale and the bag tag receipt), the weight you type, the bag tag number (read from the photo on the phone, or typed) and your notes are saved in the app's private storage. If you scan a boarding pass to confirm the route, only the departure and arrival airports, the airline and the flight number are kept; the name and booking reference in its barcode are skipped and never saved. Nothing is sent to the airline or anyone else. Deleting a bag or trip, or uninstalling the app, deletes them. They are excluded from cloud backup and device-to-device transfer.
- Daily security tips (optional): if you turn them on, a short tip is chosen each day from tips that come with the app, shown as a notification, and kept (the last 30) in the app's private storage for the bell on the Home screen. Nothing is downloaded or sent to show them. Turn them off in Settings at any time.
- Settings and the free-sweep counter: saved on your phone only.
Permissions and why they're needed
- Location: every Wi-Fi router and many Bluetooth devices broadcast a fixed address, and services exist that map those addresses to places. So a list of nearby Wi-Fi networks or Bluetooth devices can reveal where a phone is, and Android gives that list to apps only when they have location permission and the phone's Location setting is on. (Your phone's own Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings are part of Android and can list them with Location off; apps can't.) That is why NookScan asks for location permission and asks you to turn Location on for the Bluetooth scan and, with Pro, the hotspot scan. NookScan uses the list only to compare names, addresses and signal strength with its built-in lists on your phone; it never looks them up online or works out where you are from them. It reads your location only when you tick "Add my location" while saving a sweep, and keeps it on your phone; it never sends it anywhere. You can turn Location off again after a sweep.
- Nearby devices: to list Bluetooth devices (Android 12 and later).
- Camera: for the lens and infrared sweep, and for photos you choose to take in the room checklist and of your bags in Airport (Pro). Camera frames are analysed on the phone and not saved.
- Motion and magnetic sensors (no permission needed): during the camera sweep, the gyroscope (or, on phones without one, the accelerometer) measures how far you turn or tilt the phone, to tell a lens reflection from glare; during a sweep and in the Magnetic field tool, the magnetometer measures changes in the magnetic field. These readings are used on the phone while you scan and are not saved or sent.
- Notifications (Android 13 and later, optional): asked for only if you turn on the daily security tip. Without it, tips still appear under the bell.
- Network access: to check which devices are on the Wi-Fi network you're connected to. The app only contacts private addresses on that network; it never logs in to devices or opens their video.
When information leaves your phone
- When you share a report: the text or PDF goes only to the app (for example WhatsApp or email) and the people you choose. Saved sweeps and any location saved with them are not shared by NookScan.
- When you buy or restore Pro: Google Play processes the payment and tells the app whether your Google Play account owns Pro. We receive purchase status from Google Play but no card details. Google's own privacy policy applies to Google Play.
- When you choose to review NookScan: after you save a sweep, Google Play's review card may appear (Google decides whether and how often it shows). Your rating and review go to Google Play under your Google account; the app doesn't see them. Google's own privacy policy applies.
Children
NookScan is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country).
Your rights
Because we don't hold personal information about you, there is normally nothing for us to access, correct or delete. Everything the app stores can be deleted by deleting rooms in the app or uninstalling it. You can contact us with any privacy question.
Changes
If this policy changes in a significant way, the app will show you the new version before you continue.
